World war II is rapidly drawing to a close when a marauding German U-Boat torpedoes an armed merchantmen in tropical waters. Following operational procedure to protect its exact position, the U-boat methodically kills all survivors. Only Murphy (Peter O Toole), an atheist Dublin aviation mechanic and one of those individualists born to survive, manages to outwit the Germans.
